Damien Shen: On the Fabric of the Ngarrindjeri Body – Volume II Friday 16 June

South Australian artist, Damien Shen descends from Ngarrindjeri and Chinese bloodlines. His artistic practice is embedded in histories; revisiting the people, places and stories that shape the world he occupies. Through this body of work, a collaborative series with photographer Richard Lyons, Shen draws on this rich cultural heritage to create works of cultural and personal meaning.

NAIDOC Week 2017 @ MARS opens Saturday 1 July 3 – 5 pm at MARS Gallery. NAIDOC Week 2017 @ MARS brings together five indigenous Australian contemporary artists from the Gunditjmara, Yorta Yorta, Ngarrindjeri, Worimi, Wadawurrung and Taungurong tribes. Through a mix of old and new media this group show explores themes of cultural dichotomy, the historic representations of First Nation’s people, repressed cultural identity and interpretations of Indigenous culture through the everyday items of ancestors. NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society. ARTISTS: Damien Shen, Josh Muir, Genevieve Grieves, Jenny Crompton Steven Rhall. All are welcome.

The Y Water Discovery Centre @ Yea Wetlands will be celebrating NAIDOC Week with a range of educational and fun activities for all ages.Join Angela Tenburren (Taungurung representative) on Sunday 2nd of July at 1pm for a ‘Walk in the Wetlands’. Angela will discuss the indigenous plants of the Yea Wetlands and their traditional uses. The walk will conclude with a ‘Taste of Taungurung’ afternoon tea at the Y Water Discovery Centre. There will also be a display of tools and baskets made from indigenous plants with their Taungurung names. For the kids there will be an Indigenous Wetlands Walk Trail Quiz and Sand Wizard Art on offer.On Wednesday 5th July the Centre will host school holiday activities at 10am and 2pm. Join talented indigenous artist Cassie Leatham to create bush animals from natural materials found and collected in the Yea Wetlands. Bookings are required for these activities.

The members of The Letter String Quartet (TLSQ), Steph O’Hara (Blue Grassy Knoll, Polyglot), Lizzy Welsh (Australian Art Orchestra, ELISION Ensemble), Zoë Barry (Meow Meow, Missy Higgins) and Biddy Connor (Laura Jean, Missy Higgins) each play, sing and compose for the ensemble. Having been performing together for six years, TLSQ presents wildly moving programs of new music for strings and voices through commissions and collaborations with innovative Australian and international composers including Mick Harvey, Bree Van Reyk, Andrea Keller, Wally Gunn, Ned Collette and Erik de Luca. The Letter String Quartet is driven by a desire to make new music with extraordinary artists and is thrilled to collaborate with revered indigenous singer, songwriter, author, poet and filmmaker Richard J Frankland. The concert premieres new songs written collaboratively by Richard and TLSQ’s Artistic Director Biddy Connor and re-imaginings of Richard’s already existing work. The Quartet will also collaborate with Richard to create improvisatory accompaniments for Richard’s spoken stories. Experience the socially and historically significant stories and poetry of Richard J Frankland accompanied by the wild, sonic creations of TLSQ.
